9th Grade Project: Cultivating Community – Call for Supplies

January 22, 2015 by Office

The 9th grade team is working on a project to create green spaces at Da Vinci and then lobby for greater access to green spaces in our community.  In order to make this happen, we are looking for free or extremely cheap materials through sources like Craigslist and businesses with extra materials.

If you have the time and desire to make a free craigslist pickup of any of these items, Nathan will be on campus this Saturday1/24 from 9:30am to 1:00pm, and the campus is open for drop-offs during the week from 8am to 5pm each day (and often later, just call ahead if that is the case).  Here are the materials the students have brainstormed so far.  Students can check in with Meredith or any 9th grade teacher about details.

  • Plywood
  • 2x4s
  • Soil/dirt
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Chicken wire
  • Rocks/stone-big decorative or smaller river rock type
  • Screws
  • Composting supplies including a bin
  • Worms
  • Irrigation-small sprinkler heads, tubing, etc.
  • Pallets
  • Natural fertilizer
  • Planters of any kind-pots, tires, boots, etc.
  • Plants of all types-the kids have expressed interest in flowers as well as food plants
  • Planting fabric
  • PVC pipe
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Benches or other outdoor furniture in good condition
  • Work/Gardening gloves

Lockdown Drill Recap

The lockdown drill went through without a hitch today.  Students all went into lockdown mode in their first periods, and the Sheriff’s department was able to run through a training exercise of their own and evacuated a couple classrooms.  Thank you all for participating.

Family Association Meeting, Lockdown Drill

January 20, 2015 by Office

We hope everyone had a pleasant and restful MLK Day weekend!  The 10th grade team is starting their Revolutions project today, and the 9th graders are continuing to plan out the greening of the DVC campus.

Family Association Meeting is today, 1/20 at 6:00pm.

We will be discussing second semester updates and looking ahead a bit at plans for our students experience over the next few years of high school.  All are welcome.

Lockdown Drill Thursday

We will also be having a lockdown drill this Thursday mid-morning.  We are coordinating the drill with the local sheriff’s office, who had reviewed our emergency procedures and helped us refine our practices.  Students will be told ahead of time this is a drill, and we will debrief afterwards with police, going over what went well and what we can improve on.  Please feel free (even encouraged) to discuss the drill with your student before or after we have the drill.

Dance Photos

We have had some requests for dance photos from semester 1.  In case you missed them, here they are, thanks to DVD senior Josh Caviness: https://flic.kr/ps/2Z2gwq

The 10th grade team did a cool chemistry lab last week – here are some pictures:

Semester 2 Update

January 16, 2015 by Office

Students had a productive first week back from Winter Break.  The ninth grade classes have already begun planning out how to make great green spaces on our campus, while the tenth grade students have been debating free speech and religious sensitivity and experimenting in a lab using indicators and calcium chloride (or perhaps other chemicals – chemistry never stuck with me).  Here are quite a few dates for the this Spring semester:

Parent Involvement Opportunities and Important Dates

January 20th: Family Association Meeting, 6pm in Noel’s room

February 17th: Design’s College Info Night

March: Spring Dance (date and details to be announced soon)

March 9th – 12th: Student Led Conferences

March 17th and 18th: CAHSEE Test for all 10th Grade Students

April 2nd: DVC and DVD Exhibition Night

April 4th – 13th: Spring Break

April 21st: Family Association Meeting, 6pm in Noel’s room

May 8th: Teacher Appreciation Breakfast

May 12th: Coffee with the Director (Nathan)

May 27th – June 4th: POL Schedule, all students on campus from 8am to 12pm

June 5th: Last Day of School (students on campus from 10am to 3:55pm)

Students have come back this second semester with great energy – the teachers have noticed, and the students work has shown the energy.  Congratulations to everyone that earned great grades the first semester and participated in a bit of barber shop activity at the end of the first semester:
