Latino College Expo Field Trip for 12th and 11th Grade

September 5, 2023 by Jennifer Barba

A Latino College Expo field trip typically involves a visit to an event or fair that is specifically designed to connect Latino students with higher education opportunities. These expos are organized to provide valuable information, resources, and support to Latino students who are interested in pursuing higher education.

Here’s what you can expect from a Latino College Expo field trip:

  1. Exhibitor Booths: At the expo, you’ll find a variety of exhibitor booths representing colleges, universities, trade schools, and other educational institutions. These booths often have representatives from the institutions who can answer questions about their programs, admission requirements, financial aid, and scholarships.
  2. Workshops and Seminars: The expo may offer workshops and seminars on topics such as college application strategies, financial aid and scholarships, career planning, and more. These sessions are typically conducted by experts in the field.
  3. Networking Opportunities: You’ll have the chance to network with college representatives, current college students, and other attendees. This can be valuable for making connections and gathering information about different educational paths.
  4. Information on Financial Aid: Many expos offer information on financial aid options specifically tailored to Latino students. You can learn about scholarships, grants, and other forms of financial assistance.
  5. Admissions Information: You can gather details about admissions requirements, deadlines, and application processes for various colleges and universities. This information is crucial for planning your educational journey.
  6. Career Guidance: Some expos may also provide insights into career paths and opportunities for Latino students in specific fields or industries.
  7. Cultural Events: Depending on the expo, there may be cultural events, performances, or activities that celebrate Latino culture and heritage.
  8. College Application Assistance: Some expos offer on-site assistance with filling out college applications or financial aid forms.
  9. Free Resources: Attendees often receive informational materials, brochures, and other resources to help with the college application process.
  10. Inspiration and Motivation: Expos can be inspiring, as they showcase success stories of Latino individuals who have pursued higher education and achieved their goals.

To participate in a Latino College Expo field trip, 12th grade students can pick up a permissions slip with Mr. Jackson and 11th grade students can pick up a permission slip with Mr. Covelman. Field trip forms will be due on Friday, September 8 to Mrs. Barba or Mrs. Aldrete.

National School Counseling Week- Day 5

February 10, 2023 by Jennifer Barba

Good morning.

Today is the final day of National School Counseling Week. We have enjoyed talking with you this week about “dreaming big.” Whether it’s your dreams for yourself or for our school, dreams are the fuel that keep us moving forward.

Author Carl Sandburg said, “Nothing happens unless first we dream.” Take a minute, and think about your dreams. Dreams don’t have to be about a career. Dreams can be about feelings or even helping someone else achieve their dreams. What’s one thing you can do today that moves you one step closer to a dream – any dream? Write it down or draw a picture of it. Look at it when you need encouragement.

Our dream for you – for everyone one of you – is that you feel successful here at our school and that you learn all the skills you need to reach your goals in life. We are here for you every day.

Thank you for celebrating National School Counseling Week with us. Have a safe and fun weekend!

National School Counseling Week- Day 4

February 9, 2023 by Jennifer Barba

Good morning.

This is your DVC counselors, and we are still celebrating National School Counseling Week. As we talk about “dreaming big,” how can our school help YOU dream big? Yesterday, we mentioned that our dream was that everyone in our school feels like they belong and that we create a welcoming and inclusive community together. When we build that kind of environment, our school is even more ready to help you discover and work toward your dreams.

One of our goals here is to help ensure you’re ready for what comes next –whether that’s college or a career. Did you know that starts as early as kindergarten? As you engage in your school work, you’re discovering what gives you joy, what sparks your interest and what your talents are.

At our school, we want to ensure you have access to learning and extracurricular opportunities to help you dream your dreams. Singer Suki Waterhouse said, “Don’t stop yourself from doing something you want to do because of what others might think. Only you know yourself best.”

Is anything stopping you from trying something new? A new challenge could be the first step to discovering your dreams. If you’re uncomfortable about stepping out of your comfort zone, let’s talk about it. We can help.
