We are excited to be celebrating the start of Black History Month at DVC! Students and staff representatives from our Black Student Union (BSU, a student club) as well as BLK University (a seminar course) have already begun decorating our campus. We have our first Community Dialogue (CD) of the semester scheduled for Thursday, 2/24, and that will be led by these two student groups. We are also looking forward to learning about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the upcoming weeks during advisory.

The National Honor Society is hosting a blood drive with the American Red Cross on Monday, February 14th. If you would like to help, please consider donating blood as the American Red Cross has deemed the current situation a national blood crisis. Please use the link here to set an appointment:

Students who are 16 years old can donate with parental consent. Forms can be picked up at the front office or with Ms. Regina in room 3201. Students who are 17 years and older, can donate without parental consent.

Below are various scholarships and one scholar program with upcoming deadlines in February and March:

1. Seniors: 2022-2023 Earl Woods Scholarship Program- Due March 15

TGR LA – EW Scholar Application Process 2022

The Earl Woods Scholar Program was created in 2006 to honor the vision and spirit of Earl Woods, Tiger’s father and mentor, to continue his legacy of caring and sharing. The program goes far beyond financial assistance. Holding one of the highest graduation rates among scholarship programs in the country, our unique program is committed to ensuring every scholar is supported throughout their time in college and beyond. Once selected, our scholars receive continued guidance throughout college with mentorship, personal and professional development workshops and internship placement assistance to ensure our scholars succeed and graduate with their bachelor’s degree.

The scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors, Class of 2022, in select schools in the Los Angeles area with a minimum 3.0 GPA that have plans to enroll full-time in an accredited four-year university in the United States in the upcoming academic year. Successful candidates will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated financial need and a proven commitment to community service.

Our application is now online. Please share the attached document with students at your campus who you believe are eligible to apply for the scholarship. It provides a general overview of the scholar program, eligibility requirements and documents to gather prior to starting the application. Students will also find the link to the application and can click on “Apply Now” or use the QR code to apply. The application is due by March 15, 2022.

Selected recipients will receive a scholarship of up to $5,000 (renewable for up to four years) and will be provided with holistic student support throughout their college career. Finalists will need to be available for an in-person interview on Saturday, April 30. Recipients will be announced in May.

Hello DVC Seniors and Parents,

Reminder to sign up for an appointment with me using this link if you would like assistance with applying to community colleges. I have all of Wednesday and half of Thursday of this week available.

Students will also need to know their SSN to apply so please ensure that your son/daughter has this information before their appointment. If your son/daughter does not have a SSN, they can still apply.

All college rep visits will take place in Mr. Jackson’s room (3203). As a reminder, food is not allowed during the college rep visits, however, if you would like to grab lunch after the presentation, I will give out excuse slips and extend their lunch time.

Students of all grade levels (9-12) can attend the college rep visits.

*for virtual visits, I will be logging into the zoom presentation with my own laptop, students do not need to sign in.
