(Juniors and Seniors) Fall 2023 El Camino College Dual Enrollment Course Offerings

Welcome back DVC Juniors and Seniors!

We hope you had a restful summer break and are ready to take on your junior and senior year. This Fall semester, Da Vinci is offering three dual enrollment courses. 2 of these courses are asynchronous online, and one is in-person at our Da Vinci Schools Campus (Room # TBD) on Mondays & Wednesdays from 3:30 pm- 5:00 pm. Course details are listed below:

COMS 100- Public Speaking

(Synchronous, In-Person)

CDEV 103- Early Childhood Growth & Development

(Asynchronous, Online)

ART 101- Art/Visual Culture: 

A Global Perspective

(Asynchronous, Online)

In this course, students will compose, present, and evaluate original speeches. Emphasis is placed on audience analysis, topic selection, research, evidence, organization, delivery, and critical analysis of persuasive communication. Students are required to attend out-of-class speaking events.

3 units; 3 hour lecture 

Transfer CSU, UC 

Mondays/Wednesdays 

3:30 pm -5:00 pm

Start Date: Monday, August 28th, 2023 

This course is an introduction to child development from conception through adolescence with an emphasis on the interaction between the maturational processes and environmental factors relating to physical, cognitive, and psychosocial growth. While studying developmental theory and investigative research methodologies, students will observe and interview children, evaluate individual differences and analyze characteristics of development at various stages. Also, the effect of cultural influences on development will be studied.

3 units; 3 hour lecture 

Transfer CSU, UC 

Start Date: Monday, August 28th, 2023 

This course is an introduction to art and visual culture across time and diverse cultures with a global perspective. Examining works of art through themes, theory, terminology and media, students acquire analytical and interpretive skills to develop visual literacy as well as an understanding of the role of art and visual culture in relation to contemporary life. This course explores how meaning is constructed, transmitted and negotiated in an increasingly visual world.

3 units; 3 hour lecture

Start Date: Monday, August 28th, 2023 

Who:   Juniors and Seniors from DVC, DVD, and DVS

What: College courses at Da Vinci, through El Camino College. Courses meet transfer requirements for most Cal State and U.C. campuses, as well as most private colleges and universities.

Why:   Get a start on your college credits! It looks great on your college applications. (Dual Enrollment classes do not count towards high school credits)

Cost:   Free! The state of California and Da Vinci Schools pick up the costs, including textbook fees. Donations to help cover the cost of the textbooks from families that can are appreciated.

Where: Classes will be held virtually on the El Camino College student portal (Canvas & MyECC), or they will be in-person in a DVC/DVD/DVS classroom.

If you are interested, make sure you apply to El Camino College Fall 2023 term and turn in the attached completed dual enrollment form with your student ID number and/or the application confirmation number to Ms. Aldrete by Wednesday, August 23rd.

To be eligible to take a dual enrollment class, the student will need to pass all their academic classes, have no credit recovery for a-g classes, and be a rising senior or junior student. Space is limited and we are accepting forms on a first come first serve basis!

Dual Enrollment in High School Partnership Classes

 Applying to El Camino College

All students must have applied for admission to El Camino College.

Never applied?

  • Submit an application for admission for Fall 2023: elcamino.edu/apply
  • Students can follow along screen-by-screen with this link: Help to Complete the Application for Admission
  • After submitting, you will receive your Welcome Email (with 7-digit El CaminoCollege ID #) in 1-3 business days at the personal email address given on your application.
    • If you do not receive your Welcome Email after 3 business days, please email dualenrollment@elcamino.edu

Previously applied?

  • Your El Camino student account is still in good standing if you submitted an application for admission for Spring 2023 or Fall 2022. You don’t need to reapply if you took courses during the Spring 2023 or Fall 2022 semesters, you’ll just need to submit a dual enrollment form to your counselor.
    • Not Sure if you Need to Apply Again?
  • Your El Camino College ID # is the same as previous terms and is 7-digits (no letters)
    • If you do not know your El Camino College ID #, please email us at dualenrollment@elcamino.edu

Dual Enrollment Application

All students must submit a separate, completed Dual Enrollment Application for each term they wish to be manually registered for class(es). Students, parents, and authorized high school signers can use Fill & Sign Tools in Adobe Acrobat Reader to fill out the form and draw their signatures:

  • Help to Complete the Dual Enrollment Application using Fill & Sign tools in Acrobat Reader or by printing and scanning

NOTE: Our Admissions Office cannot accept forms with typed signatures. All signatures need to be drawn using the above methods, either by pen, mouse, or touchscreen. This is the most common reason why a form cannot be processed and students will not be registered.

MyECC

MyECC is El Camino College’s secure online portal where students view their registered classes, grades, unofficial transcripts, etc. Your MyECC username and password are included in your Welcome Email. You will be prompted to create a new password when you log into MyECC for the first time.

NOTE: El Camino College recently updated the Password Requirements for MyECC. Passwords must include at least 10 characters, 1 Capital letter, 1 number (number cannot be at end or beginning of password), and no repeated/consecutive characters. View Complete Password Complexity Requirements

Canvas

Students will have access to Canvas, our online course management system, only after they are manually registered in an online class. You will need to use your MyECC login information to access Canvas.

Dropping a Class

Registered students who wish to drop the class must perform this action themselves in MyECC by the drop deadlines.

Help is Available!

Dual Enrollment offers Drop-In Help via Zoom every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00-5:00 p.m. to assist students one-on-one with questions they may have about their application for admission or Dual Enrollment Application.

TurnUp Youth Activism Remote Internship (Open to ALL Grade Levels)

TurnUp is a 501(c)(3) non-partisan non-profit organization dedicated to increasing youth civic education, empowerment, and engagement. They were recently featured in Forbes as the 2022 standout non-profit organization. 

TurnUp is offering a Youth Activism Remote Internship. The program’s format is tailored to accommodate the ever fluctuating commitments and responsibilities of a student’s lifestyle, our program is fully remote, has rolling admission and has a flexible time frame and schedule. All students have access to grow into more capable and responsible citizens and to develop their professional skills for a successful future. Students join remote teams that are energized by diverse students from around the country who work on amplifying youth civic engagement. Along with our unique curriculum, peer to peer learning and world-renowned speakers deepen their experience.

The program is free and has no costs. Students can count their participation for community service hours and TurnUp is authorized to give out awards and certificates, including The President’s Volunteer Service Award. The internship has also been invaluable for bolstering resumes, widening networking reach, and for earning college letters of recommendation.

College & Career Rep Visits This Week (5/15-5/19)

Goodmorning DVC,

Here are the list of college/career reps that will be visiting DVC during lunch this week:

  • Thursday, May 18th@ 11:45 am: U.S. Air Force (Room 3203)
  • Thursday, May 18th @ 11:45 am: POSSE Foundation Scholarship (Juniors Only, Room 3202)

All college rep visits will take place in Mr. Jackson’s room (3203), no sign-ups are required to attend. Students are able to grab lunch after the presentation as I will give out excuse slips to extend their lunch time.

DVC Students of all grade levels (9-12) can attend the U.S. Air Force Presentation.

Only current Juniors are allowed to attend the POSSE Foundation Scholarship meeting.

Juniors- Posse Foundation Scholarship Information Session (5/18)

Good afternoon 11th grade Parents and Students,

Every year, The Posse Foundation works closely with high schools to recruit Posse Scholars. Each Posse Scholar wins a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to attend one of Posse’s partner colleges or universities (check partner schools here).  If you are interested in being nominated and demonstrate leadership and academic potential, please attend our information session next Thursday, May 18th during lunch. Our Posse Foundation Information Session will be led by one of our Posse Scholar recipients, Daniela Torres (Class of 2023). It is highly encouraged for Juniors interested in Posse to attend this meeting so they can be nominated by Ms. Aldrete.

Reminder to Sign Up: 11th Grade Individual Junior Parent Meetings

Happy Tuesday Class of 2024!

Individual College and Career Junior parent meetings will run from April 10th -May 19th. Every Junior is required to set up a meeting with me and at least one parent needs to be present. This meeting can be in person or via Zoom. We will cover next year’s plans including the college process, career selection, post-high school plans, etc. Please sign up for a day and time by next Friday, April 21st.  These meetings can also be done in Spanish if needed.
