Career Pathways Summer Course Opportunities @ El Camino College Summer 2023

Summer courses at El Camino College are an excellent way to learn more about your career pathway(s) of interest!  ECC Summer classes run from June 19-August 10.

We encourage you to consider registering for any of these you find interesting, regardless of which school you attend or which pathway you are currently in. More information about class meeting days and times can be found here (Select “summer” for the term)→ 

The classes listed below are an opportunity for you to learn more about your particular area(s) of interest and will be valuable additions to your resume and college applications, but they are not transferable for high school graduation credit and will not go on your Da Vinci transcript.

To register for a summer course at El Camino College, please follow the steps described on the next page.

If  you are interested in enrolling in a course, please complete the following steps:

Step 1: Apply to El Camino College

Never applied?

  • Submit an application for admission for Summer 2023: www.elcamino.edu/apply
  • Students can follow along screen-by-screen with this link: Help to Complete the Application for Admission
  • After submitting, you will receive your Welcome Email (with 7-digit El Camino College ID #) in 1-3 business days at the personal email address given on your application.
    • §  If you do not receive your Welcome Email after 3 business days, please email: dualenrollment@elcamino.edu

Previously applied?

  • Your El Camino student account is still in good standing if you submitted an application for admission for Spring 2023 or Winter 2023
  • Your El Camino College ID # is the same as previous terms and is 7-digits (no letters)
  • If you do not know your El Camino College ID #, please email: dualenrollment@elcamino.edu

Step 2: Complete the Dual Enrollment Application

Once you apply to ECC and receive your ECC ID, you must complete a Dual Enrollment Application.

  • Students must submit a completed Dual Enrollment Application for each term they wish to registered for. Once the student and parents complete the Dual Enrollment Form, please contact your counselor  to obtain their signature in Section III of the Form
  • Next, email the completed Dual Enrollment Form, with signatures from student, parent and counselor to:  dualenrollment@elcamino.edu

 Step3: Check for prerequisites

 Some courses have prerequisites which students must clear before they can register: List of courses with a prerequisite.

 Step 4: Enroll in course

After Steps 1-3 are completed, you are ready to register for classes online using MyECC!

  • Students can register anytime on or after your Registration Appointment for the term
  • Students can register for any class section of the course(s) listed on your Dual Enrollment Application form

DVC Students Make DECA History at California Career Development Conference

Eight members of Da Vinci Communications’ DECA program earned awards at the 2023 California Career Development Conference in Anaheim this month in two days of written and role-playing competition, with 2,400 participants from 47 chapters across the state. Six of the 29 DVC students who participated qualified to attend DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Orlando in April as competitors or to participate in the THRIVE Leadership Academy. This is the first time DVC students have qualified for the international competition.

DECA is a student organization whose mission is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in business, marketing, entrepreneurship, and hospitality.

At the state competition known as SCDC, students have enriching experiences in workshops and in competitive events while also networking and building connections with students across the state. DVC competed in several different competitive events, including role-play in food marketing, marketing communications, retail merchandising, and sports and entertainment marketing. In these events, the students have 10 minutes to prepare a response to a marketing problem. DVC DECA students also competed in two written project events, the Integrated Marketing Campaign and the Innovation Plan. In the fall, the students wrote 10-page papers for these events in their Marketing Pathway class; at the conference, they presented them to a judge for 15 minutes.

Here are the students who made DVC DECA history:

  • Hilda Donis and Eryn Allen—  3rd place in the Innovation Plan event and ICDC qualifiers
  • Daniela Torres — 5th place overall and ICDC qualifier in the Marketing Communications Series event, 3rd place for role play 1
  • Alani Flores and Karina Ruiz — 8th place overall for the Integrated Marketing Campaign – Services event, 1st place presentation; attending THRIVE Academy at ICDC
  • Samantha Guevara — 9th place overall in the Retail Marketing Series event, 1st place in role play 1; attending THRIVE Academy at ICDC
  • Karina Ruiz — Finalist, Food Marketing Series event role play
  • Dallas Estell — Finalist, Marketing Communications Series event role play
  • Jalen Coleman — 3rd place in Sports and Entertainment Marketing Series event role play 1
  • Alani Flores — Finalist, Sports and Entertainment Marketing Series event role play

“It felt surreal knowing I was going to ICDC, and I was very surprised that I qualified,” said senior Daniela Torres. “It felt crazy that I had it in my hands and that it was actually mine.”

Junior Samantha Guevara added, “The DECA ribbon around my neck felt like an honor knowing that I was able to represent my chapter and my loved ones back at home.”

“I think being confident is what helped me do well and stand out,” said junior Karina Ruiz. “Although I was really nervous, I made sure to try and not let it show. My team member and I were prepared, and knew how to bounce off of each other well and finish each other’s sentences.”

During the opening session, DVC DECA’s chapter presidents Hilda Donis, and Daniela Torres introduced the chapter to all attendees. In addition, the chapter’s VP of Career Development, Alvin Liu, was awarded Chapter Leader of the Year. DVC DECA was also recognized for completing promotional and community service campaigns in the fall and earned the THRIVE Level Award for the 2022-23 school year.

“While holding office, I wanted to provide the experience previous officers had given to me prior to my year of service,” said Alvin Liu, a DVC senior. “I’m proud of braving the challenges and for the support our officer team provided to the chapter throughout the year, and the investments each student made.”

This year’s lineup of Marketing Pathway students truly made an impact on our chapter’s history, and our delegation is proud to represent DVC and California DECA at ICDC for the first time next month.

Week 27 Schedule

Student-Led Conferences begin tomorrow! We look forward to partnering with our families in support of each student’s success. If you have yet to sign up for a conference, please contact your student’s Grade Level Homeroom Teacher for the sign up link. Here are the general dates and times for our conferences:

IN PERSON, ON CAMPUS: 

  • Monday, March 13th from 2:00 – 3:30 PM 
  • Tuesday, March 14th from 2:00 – 3:30 PM 
  • Wednesday, March 15th from 2:00 – 3:30 PM 

VIRTUAL THROUGH ZOOM:

  • Thursday, March 16h from 2:00 – 3:40 PM

 

Students will be dismissed at 1:50pm this week in order to accommodate our conference schedule. There is no school on Friday, 3/17; it is a professional development day for DVC staff.

 

After School Tutoring: From 2pm – 3pm this week, we will have after school tutoring available for all students. If your student needs extra help in a subject (especially math or science), please have them take advantage of this opportunity. 

 

Exhibition Night: Mark your calendars! Our spring Exhibition Night is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29th from 5:30pm – 7:00pm. All students are expected to attend and our 9th and 11th grade students will be exhibiting their work. Please invite friends and family to this special event that is open to our entire community.

 

Da Vinci Schools CARnival: Da Vinci Schools will be hosting our 2nd annual CARnival on Saturday, March 25th from 10am-5pm! This fun day of games, food, entertainment, and cars is an important fundraiser that supports student activities and is open to the community! Please join us and invite your friends and family.

  • Saturday, 3/25: CARnival Event (fundraiser and community event hosted by Da Vinci Schools)
  • Tuesday, 3/28: Credit Recovery Meeting (9th Grade)
  • Wednesday, 3/29: Exhibition Night (9th & 11th grades showcasing; all students expected to attend)

San Jose State University will be hosting theirr 5th Annual LA to the Bay: SJSU New Black Spartan Reception on March 18th, from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. This special event will be for all Black/African American students in Southern California admitted to SJSU for Fall 2023. Announcements From Real World Learning Director (3.9.2023)

For students interested in STEM:

The Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship (KKCF) is cofounded by Hip Hop Artist French Montana and supports youth interested in STEM. Through a 12-month fellowship program, Fellows will complete 80 hours of summer curriculum to prepare them for college, the future of work, and STEM careers, while participating in monthly career workshops throughout the academic year. During the summer months, Fellows will participate in six weeks of summer instruction, then receive monthly career coaching sessions and workshops. Fellows will use industry-standard technologies to learn how to create a brand, understand selling, create a proper wireframe, basic HTML & CSS coding, and more.
